Reflections and Forward Thinking

December 5, 2019

Last week, as I approved another multi-million dollar building permit, I decided to see where we were on total permit values. As of November 8th, we hit $1.5 billion. We have also processed over 3,000 more permits than 2018. I am pleased with the staff for stepping up to process the volume of permits and inspections we handle every day. There will be challenges in 2020 with the implementation of the new code. The HBA has stepped up to sponsor training in December with a seminar at Parkview Field. ACBD will look to host several learning sessions on the new code in the next few months.

There have been a lot of conversation going around about the use of strong-backs in framing. While not addressed in code, ACBD has concerns with some (not all) of the framing configurations seen during framing inspections. ACBD is working with the HBA on a standard, stamped engineering guide-sheet for strongback framing. As long as framers are within the guidelines prescribed on this guide-sheet, no additional engineering is required. However, deviations from this sheet not listed in the IRC may require additional engineering documents. Be on the lookout in the next month or two for the guide-sheet.

Finally, look for your contractor renewals to be mailed in mid-December. Please pay attention to the envelope stuffers for important updates on policies and changes for 2020.

One other note: ACBD office will be closed on December 11, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

Best Regards,
John Caywood
Allen County Building Commissioner
